Workplace intelligence by Confucius

Nine “states of mind” to return to - Workplace Intelligence by Confucius. 

1. for eyes: bright - accurate perception: seeing what’s actually happening before your mind fills in the story. Separate observation from interpretation. “Can you send that today?” you might read it as passive aggressive. Bright eyes notices what is actually there: a request, a deadline, maybe stress, but not proof of disrespect.

2. for ears: penetrating - listening precisely: It’s listening before you respond or even have a second thought. Don’t speak for the first beat. Let the other person finish, pause, and then reflect back the core in your own words, cleanly, without spin.

3. for countenance: cordial - It’s the ability to show goodwill even under pressure . Soften one notch on purpose, unclench the jaw, loosen the brow, let your eyes communicate, I’m here, I’m listening. Cordial countenance is quiet leadership, the atmosphere shift that makes truth telling possible.

4. for demeanor: humble - “Cordial” is the mood you bring; “humble demeanor” is the posture. Humility isn’t self depreciation. It’s staying teachable, staying proportionate, and not needing to dominate the room to feel secure. “What am I missing?”
 

5. for words: trustworthy - When your speech is clear and reliable, no fog, no spin, no quiet evasions. people will start collaborating with you. Make one promise smaller and cleaner. Say what you can do, by when, and then do it. It starts as honesty with yourself: seeing what you actually have bandwidth for, what you actually mean, what you’re actually willing to stand behind. Trustworthy words prevent that chain downstream reaction.

6. for service: reverent - taking your role seriously without making it heavy. doing the work with attention, because other people will live inside the consequences of what you do. “Will this create clarity, or confusion for the next person?”

7. for doubt: questioning - you go straight to what you need: clarity. It prevents the expensive mistake of building on a wrong assumption. “What’s our priority?”

8. for anger: circumspect - It can be valuable information: something matters, something feels off, a boundary got crossed. Keep the force, change the form. Name the issue cleanly, without threat or contempt : “I’m frustrated, and here’s what needs to change.” Then stop, let the message land without escalation. 

9. for facing a chance to profit: moral - Before you take the win, ask one question: “Is this clean?” If it isn’t, don’t take it, or reshape it until it is. “Profit” isn’t only money. It’s credit, advantage, status, the quick win, the tempting shortcut.

“Avoid deviation” is simple: stay aligned, so stress (or ego) doesn’t knock you into unforced errors: reactive words, sloppy decisions, needless conflict.

 

Before your next meeting or difficult message, run a thirty second scan. 
Bright eyes.

Humble posture. 
Trustworthy words. 
Reverent work.

Sanatana Dharma

Sanātana Dharma (सनातन धर्म) means “the eternal way of life.” It is the traditional self-description of what is today called Hinduism.

  • Sanātana = eternal, timeless, universal

  • Dharma = cosmic order, duty, righteousness, way of living
    Together, it refers to a timeless spiritual and ethical framework rather than a single, fixed religion.

Taraka Mantra/ तारक मन्त्र / தாரக மந்திரம்

 

What is Tāraka Mantra?

(तारक मन्त्र / தாரக மந்திரம்)

Tāraka means “that which ferries one across” — across saṁsāra (birth and death).
The Tāraka Mantra is the liberating mantra of Śiva, traditionally said to be whispered by Lord Śiva into the right ear of a dying person in Kāśī (Varanasi), ensuring liberation.


Kāśī is compassion for those who fear the last moment.
Arunachala is compassion that removes the fear-maker itself.
The Tāraka Mantra ferries the soul across death.
Arunachala’s Silence reveals that there was never a crossing to be made.

1. What exactly is the mantra?

Classical identification

Most traditions identify the Tāraka Mantra as:

ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namaḥ Śivāya

This is considered the pañcākṣarī mantra, the core Śaiva mantra capable of granting moksha.

Subtle understanding

Some texts state:

  • The mantra is not merely words

  • It is Śiva’s own consciousness transmitted directly

    In bhakti and Advaita traditions, remembrance of the Absolute dissolves ego and karma. The phrase emphasizes that mental contact with Arunachala—without rituals or effort—is sufficient, because remembrance aligns the mind with Truth.

    “Ninaithālē” (by thinking alone) highlights Śiva’s grace (anugraha). Liberation is not achieved by human striving alone, but by grace that flows when the ego subsides—even momentarily.

  4. Teaching of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi
    Ramana Maharshi often said:

    “Arunachala is the Self. To think of Arunachala is to be the Self.”
    Thus, thinking of Arunachala is Self-abidance, which is moksha itself—not something attained later.

Atma Vichara - Who am I?

Ātma-vichāra (Sanskrit: आत्म विचार) literally means “self-inquiry.” It is the method taught by Sri Ramana Maharshi for realizing the Self (Ātman) — the pure awareness underlying all experience.

Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879 – 1950) was a revered Indian sage and spiritual teacher from Tiruchuzhi, Tamil Nadu. At the age of sixteen, he experienced a profound spontaneous realization of the Self, leading him to understand that the true “I” is not the body or mind but the pure, deathless consciousness that underlies all.

He later settled at the sacred Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai, where devotees gathered around him. Ramana lived a simple, silent life, teaching mainly through presence and few words. His central teaching was the path of Ātma-vichāra (Self-inquiry) — asking “Who am I?” — to turn attention inward and realize one’s true nature. He taught that liberation is not something to be attained but the recognition of what we already are — pure awareness, beyond all change.

Ramana Maharshi’s life was marked by serenity, compassion, and profound peace, making him one of the most respected modern saints of India, whose message continues to inspire spiritual seekers worldwide.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide on how to practice Ātma-vichāra:

1. Understand the Aim

The goal is Self-realization — to directly experience your true nature as pure consciousness, beyond body, mind, and ego.
You are not trying to gain new knowledge but to remove ignorance about who you truly are.

2. The Core Question: “Who am I?”

The main inquiry is simple yet profound:

“Who am I?”

You use this question not for verbal answers but as a pointer to turn awareness inward.

Whenever thoughts arise — “I am the body,” “I am thinking,” “I am angry” — ask:

“To whom does this thought arise?”
The answer will come naturally: “To me.”
Then ask:
“Who am I?”

This shifts attention away from the thought to the sense of “I” itself.

3. Trace the “I”-Thought to Its Source

All experiences are based on the feeling “I am.”
The mind constantly projects this “I” into roles and stories — “I am this,” “I do that.”
Ātma-vichāra involves turning inward to find the source of this ‘I’ before it identifies with anything.

Instead of chasing thoughts, stay with the sense of ‘I’ itself, like tracing a river back to its origin.
When the mind turns inward, thoughts subside, and pure awareness shines by itself.

4. What to Do During Practice

  • Sit quietly; let the body relax.

  • Bring attention to the feeling “I exist” — the raw sense of being.

  • Whenever thoughts arise, don’t fight them. Just ask:

    • “To whom has this thought come?”

    • Then bring focus back to the “I”-sense.

  • Persistently tracing the “I”-thought inward dissolves the ego-mind.

This isn’t a mantra or mental repetition; it’s an attentive stillness.

5. The Result

As the false “I” (ego) fades, what remains is pure awareness — still, luminous, without boundaries.
This is the true Self (Ātman), identical with Brahman, the infinite consciousness.

In this state, the question “Who am I?” dissolves, as there is no longer a separate “I” to ask it.

Japanese Principles

Japanese aesthetic and philosophical principles, each rooted in the traditional way of perceiving life, beauty, and the relationship between people and things.

Taken together, these six ideas — Cherish (愛でる・Mederu), Perfect (極める・Kiwameru), Consider (気遣う・Kidukau), Savor (味わう・Ajiwau), Purify (清める・Kiyomeru), and Harmonize (調和させる・Chowa saseru) — form what could be called a philosophy of attunement or aesthetic mindfulness in Japanese culture.

Cherish 愛でる(Mederu) 

In Japan, the idea of cherishing is deeply connected to Yaoyorozu no Kami — the belief that gods reside within all things. Every object, every item in your surroundings is thought to have its own spirit, its own essence. To cherish, then, is to recognize and honor the quiet life within the things around you.

Perfect 極める (Kiwameru)

It means carefully selecting the things you allow into your life and finding the precise balance of what you truly need. To perfect is to curate your world with intention — to shape your space so it resonates with happiness and clarity.

Consider 気遣う(Kidukau) 

Through the act of choosing and interacting with what you own, you begin to understand yourself more deeply. Every object invites awareness — when you touch it, your body responds; your energy either lifts or grows heavy. To consider is to listen to these subtle signals — to let your body be your guide between mindfulness and material life.

Savor 味わう(Ajiwau) 

To savor is to give your full attention and time to what is before you. Whether it’s a meal, an object, or a moment, savoring asks you to linger — to experience things completely. It is an act of appreciation that transforms the ordinary into something profound.

Purify 清める (Kiyomeru)
